Salon.com | Debunking the Economist — again. Salon has a way with these sorts of articles. To be honest, I’m not sure exactly where and how I come down on the issue of globalization yet, but I really feel as if the debate is coming to a head.
Maybe this isn’t the issue that will spring the masses to action this election cycle, but this globalization/anti-globalization debate is finally getting some real airtime. In ‘99 the Seattle anti-WTO riots were a relative laughingstock… “oh, those silly liberals, when will they ever learn?” Five years ago, these real debates on globalism just didn’t happen.
John Ralston Saul just published a really enlightening article in Harper’s magazine entitled “The Collapse of Globalism and the Rebirth of Nationalism”. I read it over the weekend and was particularly impressed. In addition, Lou Dobbs held an interview with Saul today on CNN (which I just randomly happened to tune into at that moment). Dobbs is usually relatively conservative I find, but I was impressed to see how much he was taken by Saul’s argument. I think that speaks to the newfound gravity of the issue.
The truth is, I don’t entirely know where I stand on globalism yet. If I knew all the important answers I suppose I wouldn’t be a college student. Still, this is a debate I intend to be watching for awhile.
