The NY Times released an article today about an NYU student who lived in the basement of a library for 8 months because his financial aid package was inadequate. And the funny thing is, NYU is taking this as a point of pride! Listen to this:
“N.Y.U. doesn’t attract just smart students, it attracts smart, eclectic students,” said Mr. Beckman, the university spokesman. “We had a film student who wanted to film a couple performing a live sex act in front of a class. We had students who set up a swimming pool in their dorm room. Now we have this fellow.”
On one hand, this guy obviously didn’t use the resources available to him very well (I don’t think he was trying very hard), but on the other hand, it sounds like a lot of different people failed him. His parents divorced and both refused to pay for his education (keep in mind this is a dean’s list student). The school offered him a bad aid package and he couldn’t secure a private loan. At least the student says it was good for his writing…
As of right now, his website is down. I guess that’s what being in the NY Times will do to you. I’ll keep trying to get onto his blog, I’m sure it’s full of interesting stuff. In the meantime, I’ll just be glad I can blog from my dorm room.
…oh yeah. I should mention the story I heard last week. Apparently a Carleton student is currently living in the Arb because he graduated early and he wants to stay in Northfield to play rugby. From what my friend told me, he has a tent and he’s moving it around from time to time so he doesn’t get caught. Granted, it’s not exactly sleeping in a NY library, but it’s noteworthy, nonetheless.
For now, my clearly unadventurous self will get back to homework and stop procrastinating so much. This blog will be the death of me.
