OK, so it’s been a week since the one-acts actually happened, but I figure it’s finally time I get the images up. The one-acts went terrifically, and my actors were fantastic.

For anyone who doesn’t know, I first tried my hand at directing this term by directing a student-written one-act show called “Flamingo.” The synopsis is somewhat as follows:

Student Anthony decides that the atmosphere on campus isn’t “wierd” enough. He decides to stir things up by throwing muffins at people, giving silly surveys, all while impeccably dressed. One of his victims is Lisa, who is unimpressed but decides to play along. She gets Anthony to “play her ass like a bongo,” until Rachel enters. Rachel and Lisa are in cahoots, and through some backhand manipulation manage to seduce Anthony into coming to an “orgy.”

When Anthony arrives, they put a ski mask over him, taunt him, manipulate him, and humiliate him. They attack his motives for trying to be wierd, then abandon him, tied to a chair in their basement. Anthony is disturbed and fearful, wondering why he got himself into this mess. Finally, he convinces himself that he must be a masochist for wanting to take part in this, and awaits their return so he can get the pain he really wants.

However, Lisa and Rachel return bound and masked, pushed at gunpoint by Nathan, their previous victim. Nathan speak eloquently about what it felt like to have his foot put on a hot waffle iron (their torture of him). He says that in his disabled state, he developed a liking for a Russian TV show called “Flamingo” about men with amputee fetishes. Suddenly, he declares that the girls deserve a “taste of their own medicine,” and whips out a meat cleaver, which he uses to chop off Lisa’s leg and rape her.

If it sounds fucked up, that’s because it is. But let me tell you, it turned into a fantastic show. The timing was terrific, and it struck just the sort of black humor nerve that gives you shivers all the way down your spine (at least it did for me, every time I saw it). Not that I can really take the credit for that; it was just well-written with fantastic actors.

Anyway, I apologize for the blurriness of many of the pictures. My digital camera doesn’t handle low-light situations very well. I think it’s time that I upgrade. At any rate, I think these’ll help people get an idea of the show and the staging.

If anyone is interested, I’ll be more than happy to give you the contact information for the author, and with his permission, give you a copy of the script. If there’s interest, I’ll ask him if I can post the script on here. This was a really good show, and I’d like to see it performed elsewhere. In the meantime, let me know what you think of the image gallery. Thanks.

  1. [...] …and right now I’m losing bad. Believe it or not, my top search engine referrer right now is for “amputee Flamingo” on Yahoo! Search, as a result of my old post on the one act play I directed. This is slightly disturbing. [...]
