Cambridge

Well, after two weeks in and about London, as well as in France, I finally arrived in Cambridge this morning. From what I’ve seen of the city, I really like it a lot. Most of the downtown area is closed to cars during the day, and everything is within a very short walk. The colleges are interspersed throughout everything. Despite the age of everything, the place bustles with a young vibrancy.

Along with the other Carleton students, I’ll be living in Hughes Hall. Hughes is primarily a college for graduate students, which is great for us, especially since the accomodations are very nice. We each have singles with plenty of space and private bathrooms. Most importantly, we each have our own computer terminals in our rooms. Hopefully, this means I’ll be able to blog regularly once again.

This evening, we ate in the dining hall on the program. Let’s just say, Carleton’s food service has some serious work to do. At Carleton, they’d sooner be caught dead than serve us "real" fish (by which I mean an actual normal-sized portion of fish that hasn’t been breaded and frozen until it resembles beef jerky). Here, we got salmon with a mustard sauce. For dessert, I had an excellent berry cake, with 4 different types of berries, one of several options. If Sodexho (Carleton food service) served that much fruit, they’d probably spontaneously combust from a lack of white cream sauce.

I have a feeling I’m going to like it here.
