Stepping Back

The world is a screwed up place, and I like it that way.

Did you ever have one of those days where you step back for a second and realize that your life is like a soap opera, your world is shifting faster than you can imagine, and you are absolutely crazy? You think to yourself, “why am I not a nervous wreck right now? By all accounts I should be.”

And then you realize it’s because you like it that way.

In the last few weeks, I feel like my entire worldview is being challenged. My girlfriend and I are undergoing a transition in our relationship. Distance brings huge challenges to any relationship, and the complexity and discovery of an off-campus program adds even more. We’re loosening things up and charting a new path, literally breaking all the rules and reconstructing them from the beginning on our own terms.

My friend thinks we’re crazy, and we probably are. It’s been a trying process. But I’ve been actively meeting people and opening myself up to them in ways I haven’t done in a long time. And at the same time time, I’m learning more about my relationship. Instead of pulling us apart, the process of establishing an open relationship is going to force us to examine the things that make our really make our relationship worthwhile. If you learn to stay calm through the turmoil, focusing on the truly important things becomes easy.

Life really is one big mis-adventure, isn’t it? :-)
