Why Exercise is Bad for You

Going for a 40 mile bike ride seems like a good idea on the surface. I mean, it’s good exercise, you get to enjoy the weather and see some good scenery, and it gets you off of the couch for awhile, so it should be the ideal way to spend an afternoon, right? Wrong.

It turns out that hunching over for 3 hours while riding a bike is bad for your back. Really bad for your back. In fact, after I finished my ride I could barely stand up straight it hurt so much. This is not a good feeling.

After taking some Aleve and laying down on the couch for half an hour or so, I feel much better. My legs still feel like rubber though, and I’m really tired. I think I’ll be ok, but right about now I’m wondering “what was I thinking?”

As for the scenery, it was nice, but I could only enjoy it on the way out, because on the way back, I was in too much pain. Maybe if I take a shorter bike ride next time, say 20 miles, I can still get in some exercise and my back will thank me.

Then again, maybe I should just stick to swimming and swing dancing.
