The Nature of Economics

A physicist, a chemist, and an economist are stranded on a desert island. All they have is one can of food, and if they can’t open it, they will starve. So they set about the task of deciding how to open the can.

The physicist speaks first. He says “I’ve got it! If I take my glasses, and I focus them just right with the sun, we can burn a hole right through the can and get the food.”

The chemist replies, “No, that’s way too hard. We’re surrounded by salt water. Let’s just immerse the can in the water, and soon enough the tin will corrode and we’ll have our food.”

Not to be outdone, the economist says “No, no, no, you guys are going about this all wrong. Just assume a can opener!”
