I’m going to India!
“What’re you doing this summer?” is the worst question you can possibly ask any college student. Because, let’s be honest, most college students haven’t thought past what they’re eating at their next meal. With the exception of those super-planned, over-stressed thought-out-way-ahead people that put us all to shame (read: evil demons), planning is not our strong suit.
But in a monumental feat of motivation, I have managed to buck the trend. This fall, I spent lots of time working on securing an internship with BASIX, a group in India that does Microfinance. I figure this is the last time I can legitimately take advantage of some parental contacts. Since these guys are non-profit, they can always use extra help, so they offered me a non-paying internship.
So cool, I got myself an internship in India. But how the heck was I going to pay for it. I applied for a Carleton grant through the Initiative for Service Internships in International Development, and I recently found out I got it! So now I have 5 grand to spend the summer traveling around India working for these folks.
I asked Nathan, the professor I went to Cambridge with, for a recommendation. When I went in to tell him I got the fellowship, he said “I see you’re continuing your policy of seeing the world on Carleton’s tab.” Amen to that. ![]()
