Getting sick in a foreign country sucks.
I am right now on the mend from a bout of something-or-other that I caught who knows where. That’s the thing about getting sick in a place like India. In the States, you can always be like “it was ___ that I had at ___ restaurant,” or I caught it from ___. Here, that doesn’t work. The whole country is full of hazards left and right, and when you roll the wrong dice, the cause could literally be anything.
On the plus side, medical care is CHEAP. Cheap and plentiful. The doctor on call charged me 200 rupees (a little over $4) to visit me in my hotel room with an hour’s notice, which I’m told is twice the usual rate. He prescribed me no less than five medicines, which combined cost only $3. Is it overkill? Probably. But I felt better fast.
I’m not usually one to miss home or even to stop and worry about such things on the road. But I’ll admit, when being sick really knocks you down, sometimes you just want to take a break for awhile, even from a country as amazing as India. This internship has been nothing if not fast paced and intense, and right now, I feel like I’m struggling just to keep up.
So here’s to getting better fast, and to getting back up to speed. ![]()
