FTV

Did you know there’s a channel called fashion television?

Me neither. But while channel surfing today, I stumbled upon it somewhere between the 3-dozen channels showing Indian music videos. In watching it, I was quickly reminded of a few important truths:

  • Most runway models are not really all that attractive. In general, they’re twigs with funny looking faces. And–dare I be crass–weird-looking boobs.
  • Fashion is the most self-important field ever. And this is coming from an economist.
  • 85% of designer fashion is unoriginal or ridiculous. Sometimes, one could do better by shooting at a dartboard with random fashion elements on it, I swear.
  • The most annoying thing ever may well be photographers and video editors who feel compelled to add to the “fashionable experience” by cutting between clips and adding effects as if they have severe ADD.
  • Listening to droning house music will make you fashionable no matter how alien-like you look.

Just remember: this is the image we send to the rest of the world.

In the meantime, I’ll be tuning into channel 8 at 6:30 on Tuesdays. Lingerie modeling. ;-)

  1. There’s also the Style Network, which is now part of our basic cable package. But what I bet you really didn’t know is that there’s a show on it called Craft Corner Deathmatch where people decoupage and paper mache to the death against the Craft Lady while locked in metal cages. I am not even making this up. It is amazing.
