Stupid deadlines.
I don’t really want to be sitting here in the Internet cafe here in Kolkata. I’d much rather be out exploring more of the city, or maybe stuffing myself silly with Bengali food and sweets. Or in all likelihood, spending more money on Indian cookbooks (in multiple moments of weakness, I’ve bought a half dozen already).
But I told the Voice, Carleton’s alumi magazine, that I’d like to write an article on my experiences here. And it’s true; I really want to. I think that people will get a lot out of it, and I think that my experience has been pretty darn unique. They asked for me to send them something by August 20th (yesterday), and I’m racing to get something to them before they wake up and check their email, or at least before Monday morning.
For the last couple weeks I’ve been writing a bit here and a piece there, trying to come up with something that really captures what I’m doing to people who have no idea what I’m talking about. Thus, what I have produced is basically a scattering of bits and pieces, with nothing tying it together. Now, I just have to turn it into an article, one of sheer brilliance, of 750 to 1000 words. And I have to have it done yesterday.
Why do these deadlines always happen when you’re on vacation?
