Planet Carleton

Today at lunch a number of members of the blogging and web communities at Carleton had a great meeting (John even dubbed it Carleton BloggerCon 2006). We began to develop a plan for how to promote a unified community of bloggers at Carleton. After discussing a number of possibilities, we agreed that there needs to be a two-tiered approach.

Tier two, a unified site that integrates features such as a wiki, forums, plus a syndicated blogroll, is still in the works. However, we agreed that the first step to increasing the visibility of bloggers at Carleton is an index of bloggers in the Carleton community. Carleton bloggers need to be less isolated, and it needs to be easier to see what’s going on in the Carleton blogosphere. (Is blogosphere the term for a subset of the blogging community? Bloggerhood, anyone?)

To that end, Carleton ITS has developed Planet Carleton, a website that aggregates content from member sites. It has everything from student blogs to official news items. In short, it’s a one-stop location where you can see what’s new at Carleton. Although it’s still in the testing phases, and may not be feature-complete, I predict that this site will become a central resource for people who want to know what’s new at Carleton.

I hope this site gets a lot of use. It can only be to the benefit of Carleton bloggers, as well as to the blogosphere in general. Go check it out already!

One Response to “Planet Carleton”

  1. If “blogosphere” derives from a term like “biosphere,” then perhaps “blogome” is the equivalent to “biome,” and “blogosystem” to “ecosystem.”

I think John should just accept his passion and rename his department “The Department of Blogology.”
